With the increase of Ransomware viruses, Focus have released the following guidance to detect suspicious virus attachments. If in doubt, please call the IT Helpdesk and we will be able to provide assistance.

All viruses on emails come through in the attachments or within links contained in the email. Clicking on the link will download the file on to your machine and infect it.

You can take various measures yourself by ensuring you do the following:

  • Always use secure and complex passwords with capitals, numbers and special characters
  • Don’t open suspicious emails, attachment and links
  • Always allow your PC to perform updates and reboots when required.

If you suspect your machine has become infected, either pull the network cable from the back or switch it off immediately, by the plug if necessary. This will stem the flow of infection across the rest of your network. Do not power it back on until you have spoken with a member of our team.

The easiest way to identify whether a file is dangerous is by its file extension, which tells you the type of file it is. For example, a file with the .exe file extension is a Windows program and should not be opened. There are a number of other attachment types that should be deemed suspicious, these would be any including: -

.msi, .bat, .com, .cmd, .hta, .scr, .pif, .reg, .js, .vbs, .wsf, .cpl, .jar .zip

In general, you should only open files with attachments that you know are safe. For example, .jpg and .png are image files and should be safe. .pdf, .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx are document files and should also be safe.

Below are a few examples of attachments with viruses:-

The key things to check before opening an attachment are...

1) Do you know the sender?

2) Is it an email you are expecting?

3) Does the attachment have a file format listed above?
